It is with a sense of profound sadness and fond remembrance that we say our final “To me, to you” to Barry Chuckle, who passed away at the age of 73. Barry, one half of the beloved Chuckle Brothers, brightened our living rooms with laughter and joy. His legacy is one that is deeply entrenched in the heart of British pop culture, having reached and delighted generations.

Born Barry Elliot in Rotherham in 1944, he found his calling to comedy early, performing with his brother Paul. Together, they created the Chuckle Brothers, a double act that would go on to become a national treasure.

For over three decades, their BBC show “ChuckleVision” was a cornerstone of children’s television. Its simple but incredibly effective formula of slapstick comedy and humorous miscommunication brought endless entertainment to young and old alike. The show’s enduring catchphrase, “To me, to you”, is forever etched in our collective memory, a testament to its impact.

Beyond the laughter he incited, Barry was said to be a kind and generous man, known for his commitment to his fans. He treated every autograph signing, every public appearance, as a chance to bring a little more joy into the world. His off-screen persona was as heartwarming and amiable as his on-screen character, never failing to have a kind word for those he met.

Barry’s contribution to British comedy was unique. The Chuckle Brothers represented a specific brand of humour, innocent and unpretentious, that resonated with millions. Barry’s gift was his ability to turn everyday situations into bouts of laughter, to find the joy in the mundane, and to share it unabashedly.

His work alongside Paul was honoured with a special BAFTA award in 2008, acknowledging their outstanding contribution to children’s television. It was a well-deserved recognition of a career that brought smiles to countless faces.

Barry’s passing is a deep loss, but we take comfort in the indelible legacy he leaves behind. His contribution to the tapestry of British entertainment is everlasting, his memory living on in every chuckle he gifted us.

In the words of Paul, his partner in comedy and life, “I’ve not just lost my brother, I’ve lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend.” And we, in turn, have lost a figure who was, to many of us, like an extended member of our own families.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and many fans. Today, we remember Barry Chuckle with the smiles and laughter he so generously gave us. In his honour, we encourage you to share a chuckle with someone dear to you, for that is the legacy he would have wished.

Barry died of Bone Cancer on August 5, 2018 after a period of ill health.  Brother Paul revealed that he had kept it secret from his manager, fans and Paul himself as he had wanted to continue working as long as possible.

Farewell, Barry, and thank you for the laughter. Your mirth-filled spirit will remain etched in our hearts forever. To you, dear Chuckle – you will be dearly missed.
