It is with heavy hearts that we bid adieu to Denis Norden, the cherished British comedy writer and presenter, who has passed away at the age of 96. Norden, whose wit, warmth, and unique comedic voice brought joy and laughter to millions, will be deeply missed.

Born in Hackney, London in 1922, Norden’s journey into comedy began early with his work as a writer for radio during World War II. Post-war, his talent for humorous scripting found a home in the emerging medium of television, alongside writing partner Frank Muir. Together, they crafted delightful sitcoms such as “Whack-O!” and “Take it From Here,” helping to define the golden era of British comedy.

However, Norden will be best remembered as the genial host of “It’ll be Alright on the Night,” a show that turned bloopers and outtakes into comedic gold. His comforting presence, distinctive glasses, and clipboard became a familiar sight, and his wit and charm made each episode a joy to watch. Norden’s gentle, self-deprecating humour was a perfect fit for this format, his witticisms turning even the most embarrassing mishaps into light-hearted fun.

His contribution to comedy extended beyond writing and presenting. Norden was also a pioneer of comedy critique, co-creating and hosting “Laughter File,” a show that delved into the mechanics of humour. His intellectual yet accessible approach to comedy analysis helped audiences appreciate the craft on a deeper level.

Denis Norden was more than just a gifted writer and presenter; he was a kind and generous man, beloved by colleagues and fans alike. His dedication to his craft, his warmth, and his innate ability to find humour in the everyday have left an indelible mark on British comedy.

In 2004, Norden received the Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards, a fitting tribute to a lifetime dedicated to spreading joy. His work has, and will continue to, inspire countless budding comedians, writers, and presenters.

Today, as we remember Denis Norden, we celebrate not just the laughter he brought us, but also the man behind it. The twinkle in his eye, his gentle charm, and his effortless wit made him a truly unique figure in British comedy.

Denis Norden, you have truly been “alright on the night.” Your legacy of laughter will continue to resonate, your memory forever cherished. Thank you for the smiles, the laughs, and the moments of pure comedic delight. You will be dearly missed.
